Boy, it feels like an absolute eternity since I wrote about J’s eczema battle when he was an infant. Since we moved back to HK his skin had improved immeasurably, to the point where I could see he no longer had eczema and just suffered from the odd dry patch here and there. Then, just before the summer, we had one day on the beach in the sun, (and before anyone freaks out, yes, he had factor 70 on and was very covered up when playing in the sunshine) which seemed to trigger a terrible outbreak of angry, red eczema on his thighs, bum, back and arms. It’s hard to say if it was the sun, or the sunscreen itself, but my poor kid was in a lot of pain and his skin looked like it might not heal.
I don’t have any pics of his flare up but it looked very similar to this, all over his belly, back, thighs, arms, legs and bum :
I tried his previous medication but it didn’t work. We went back to applying massive amounts of moisturiser (Aveeno) every few hours but it wasn’t helping and my poor boy was clearly in a lot of pain and discomfort. A long summer holiday in the UK with unpredictable weather and very hard water did not help matters.
In August, Coconut Matter got in touch with me asking me if I would be interested in trying out their product in my recipes.Their organic coconut oil is cold pressed from wild coconut trees in the Solomon Islands. At the time I was swamped with work and J wasn’t back from the UK yet, so I was only eating breakfast food 3 times a day and saving myself the cooking time.
To cut a long story short, he’s been back 2 weeks now. I’ve been applying the coconut oil once a day, after his shower, (always lukewarm, not hot). I use about a tablespoon at a time, and giving him a proper massage, treating the red areas very gently. I make him wait 10 minutes before he can put his PJs I’ve also been stir-frying his dinner with the oil. It’s worked miraculously well – his skin is almost back to normal – he’s stopped scratching himself and can sleep soundly at night now. While I cannot say that it can cure your kid’s eczema, it certainly helped mine no end, and as it’s all natural, wild and organic, I feel very happy about using it on his skin. No more nasty steroids or chemical medication!
Having researched all about coconut oil and its benefits (including high smoke point for cooking, effective against bacteria, viruses and fungi, and a great superfood and beauty product) from when I started clean-eating, and having tried a range of different coconut oils, I am VERY impressed with Coconut Matter’s product. It comes in two different versions – WILD (HK$210 for 500ml) which has a far more delicate smell and flavour, compared to others (which can often smell like a cheap suncream or a little too sickly sweet). The FREE version ($160) is odourless which is great if you’re not a fan of the coconut smell, but don’t want to lose the benefits of it.
Coconut Matter also sell other products, including creamed coconut, coconut sugar, coconut amino sauce, chocolate coconut jam ( YES PLEASE), coconut flour and dried / dessicate coconut for cooking. Go check them out, you won’t be disappointed!
